The Walnut Hill String Quartet Intensive provides intermediate and advanced young string players an exceptional week of coachings, master classes, and a private lesson with inspiring faculty dedicated to each student’s growth. Students are placed in a string quartet according to age and level and will work extensively on two pieces from different eras, culminating in a performance at the end of the week.

The String Quartet Intensive takes place on the beautiful campus of Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, MA, outside of Boston. Day and boarding options are available.

About the Program

Faculty

Jennifer Elowitch

Violinist Jennifer Elowitch is Director of Music at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, where she was the recipient of the E. E. Ford Faculty Award for Exceptional Merit in 2016, 2021, and 2025. Co-Founder and Artistic Director Emerita of the Portland Chamber Music Festival in Maine, she is the Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and performs often with the Boston Symphony.

Julia Glenn

Violinist and Boston native Julia Glenn '07 was a member of the Naumburg-winning Lydian String Quartet and the faculty of Brandeis University after teaching for three years at the Tianjin Juilliard School in China, where she served as violin and music theory faculty and was a member of the Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble. Julia is a graduate of Walnut Hill School for the Arts, New England Conservatory, Harvard University, and Juilliard’s C.V. Starr doctoral program. Beginning this fall, she will be a member of the violin faculty at Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Mai Motobuchi

As a member of the Borromeo String Quartet, Mai Motobuchi has served as Quartet-in-Residence at New England Conservatory of Music, Taos School of Music, and Heifetz International Music Institute. Since retiring from performing in July 2022, Ms. Motobuchi is in demand as a teacher in two countries, serving on the Viola and Chamber Music faculty at both the New England Conservatory of Music and at the Tenrikyo Institute of Music in her native Japan. She has given Master Classes in conservatories and festivals around the world and served as a member of the jury at the Primrose International Viola Competition in 2021.

Kee-Hyun Kim

Cellist Kee-Hyun Kim ‘01 is a founding member of the Grammy-Award winning Parker String Quartet, Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University and Quartet-in-Residence at Walnut Hill School for the Arts. The quartet has won both the Cleveland Quartet Award and first prize at the Bordeaux String Quartet Competition. Mr. Kim is a graduate of Walnut Hill School for the Arts and New England Conservatory, where his principal teachers were Paul Katz and Laurence Lesser.
