The Walnut Hill Music Department wrapped their final performance of the Spring Opera production, Odyssey, on March 31. Commissioned by the Glimmerglass Festival in 2015, this youth opera features a cheerful, lyrical score by Ben Moore and a cleverly rhymed libretto by Kelley Rourke.
Written with young audiences in mind, this modern retelling of Homer's epic Odyssey proved to be popular with all ages. Walnut Hill was the first venue in New England to perform the opera, and creators Ben Moore and Kelley Rourke visited campus and spoke during the All-School Assembly about their process of reinventing one of the oldest works of Western literature for a contemporary audience. They also worked closely with students in the cast to help them portray historically important characters in a hip, modern way.
