Class Description 

Beginning with charcoal, then working towards pastels, students will learn various drawing skills. We will be looking at still life assemblages, landscapes, and collage.
During the 2nd half of the week, we will be using acrylic paint, studying color theory, and using what we learned about observational drawing to make small works on canvas.  All levels are welcome!

No prior skills are needed, and a willingness to try new things is highly preferred! 

Faculty

Rachel Chambers is a Fibers Artist from Philadelphia, PA.  They received a B.F.A. in Fiber Arts from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, an M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art/Temple University, and an M.Ed from Keene State College. Their teaching career began as an artist in residence at Kutztown University, then they went on to head the Fibers Department there as a sabbatical replacement for 2 years. Rachel has been a first grade teacher, a special education tutor, and a K-5 art teacher in Keene, NH. Rachel's work has been exhibited at the national and international level, and they received a NICHE Award in 2006 and was included as one of the top 50 sculptural fiber artists in 2020.  Their work is currently represented at 3rd Street Gallery in Philadelphia, PA and ArtsWorcester in Worcester, MA.  At Walnut Hill School for The Arts, Rachel teaches Weaving, Digital Surface Design for Textiles, Sculptural Fiber Arts, Apparel Design, Watercolor, and Visual Culture.  She also works as a college counselor, helping students write statements and short personal essays.

Class Description 

Beginning with charcoal, then working towards graphite and eventually micron pens, students will learn various drawing skills.  This class is more focused on use of imagination than having the “perfect drawing”.  We will be looking at still life assemblages, landscapes, and doing some collage.

Class Description 

The week will begin with some supplemental work in observational drawing skills in a variety of media.  Some work from reference photos in acrylics and watercolor, and finally some digital work to create a well rounded 2D design portfolio. Previous work can be reviewed and included, depending on the needs of each student. At the end of the week, we’ll take a look at Slideroom and Common App (a platform used by many colleges).

This class is for any high school student interested in attending an arts college or university.  If you need a full portfolio, or simply to work on some supporting materials, this is a great opportunity to have a sneak peek into how Walnut Hill prepares their graduates for going on to some of the top tier arts institutions.
