Global Discovery Programs

Walnut Hill’s Global Discovery Programs aim to provide students with the opportunity to learn through immersive experiences in unfamiliar environments, make cross-cultural connections, expand their communication skills, and develop a greater understanding of the world in which they live and the humans with whom they share it. Launched during the 2023–2024 academic year, Walnut Hill’s Global Discovery Programs have, to date, taken students on life-changing adventures to Italy and Finland, where they have explored arts and culture, given back to local communities, and built meaningful relationships with peers and fellow artists. More Global Discovery Programs are in development for the coming years.
Led by Walnut Hill faculty and staff, Global Discovery Programs are offered in a range of forms, including international exchanges, location-specific courses, and real-world extensions to short-term or long-term educational offerings.
Student eligibility requirements vary depending on the specific nature of each program. For most Global Discovery Programs, students are accepted via an application process. Information about upcoming opportunities is shared with Walnut Hill students and families as it becomes available. Additional program fees apply to each Global Discovery Program. Financial support may be available to families requiring assistance for their student’s participation.
Kicking off in May 2025 and extending through the 2025–2026 school year, Walnut Hill is currently participating in the second year of a cultural exchange program with one of our educational partners, TYK public arts high school in Tampere, Finland. Two faculty members and five students from each of the partnering schools will spend the year sharing with each other about their cultures, schools, lives and artistic practices through virtual hang outs, collaborative creative projects and international visits to each other’s school communities.
“The Walnut Hill Global Discovery Program's trip to Italy was a unique and inspiring experience. I felt safe and my sense of community with my peers and teachers felt so much stronger afterwards. The opportunity to be in a program that showed not just art but culture, and exposed me to new ideas and ways of life, was a rare and special experience that I know I will never get anywhere else. We were given the opportunity, resources, and materials to practice expressing our individual experiences through other mediums of art than that of the major which we came to school here for. I had never been so happy in my life."
