Walnut Hill School for the Arts

Alumni Spotlight: Ethan Van Ness '09 and Yi Qun Xu '13

This month, we are pleased to feature two alumni, theater major Ethan Van Ness ’09 and music major Yi Qun Xu ’13, who have taken two very different paths in their post–Walnut Hill journeys. Cellist Yi Qun has performed extensively across the United States, in addition to her work as a passionate musical ambassador and as an educator—she is currently a faculty member of The Juilliard School Pre-College’s Music Advancement Program, and serves as a teaching assistant at The Juilliard School. On Sunday, March 13, at 1:30pm, Yi Qun will make her Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum debut, performing with pianist Yoon Lee at Calderwood Hall as part of the Gardner Museum's Weekend Concert Series. The concert will include works by Amy Beach, Leoš Janáček, Sergei Prokofiev, and more. Tickets are available here.

Meanwhile, Ethan, a Senior Policy Advisor and Parliamentarian for the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, was heavily involved in the process of getting the House of Representatives to pass the Postal Service Reform Act, which took place on Tuesday, February 8. Shortly thereafter, he appeared on the National Association of Postal Supervisors podcast, discussing the landslide vote as well as the collaboration that was required on specific elements of the measure. The bill has now reached the Senate, and is expected to be ultimately signed into law.

We love hearing about the varying paths that our Walnuts take after graduation! If you have an upcoming event or life update to share, please let us know. Simply fill out the Class Notes form on our Alumni website.
