Summer Youth Dance Audition Requirements
All students applying for Summer Dance must complete the following to be considered for admission:
- Audition (live or digital)
- Audition registration form
- Audition fee of $30 (live) or $35 (digital)
- 4×6 or 5×7 photograph of first arabesque
All students applying for Summer Youth Dance must complete a dance audition in the form of a ballet class.
Live auditions occur during the month of January at a variety of locations throughout the United States. For a list of national audition tour dates, locations, and times, please click here.
The audition consists of a ninety minute ballet class including barre and center work. Pointe work will not be evaluated at this audition. Previous pointe experience is NOT required to audition as this program provides pre-pointe classes. Students will be evaluated based on technical ability and strength.
While pre-registration is not required, it is highly encouraged. Please click here to complete a Pre-Registration form online, and print/complete a Day of Audition Registration Form which must be turned in on the day of the audition along with a first arabesque photograph.
If unable to attend a live audition, students may submit a recorded audition using Slideroom. Dancers must also upload the Audition Registration Form and a first arabesque photograph to SlideRoom and pay the $35 audition fee.The audition fee can be paid by clicking here.
Digital audition submissions should be no longer than 10 minutes and must showcase barre and center work. Do not submit performance clips. Video recordings must include the following:
- Introduction (Full name, program for which you are auditioning i.e. Summer Youth Dance)
- Barre (3-5 brief combinations, one side only)
- Grand allegro
Recordings should be received by February 1, 2017. Recorded auditions received after this date will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
Students attending a live audition may submit cash or check for the amount of $30 to the audition personnel during registration. Checks can be made out to Walnut Hill School for the Arts and should include the dancer’s name in the memo section. This fee is non-refundable. We do not accept credit cards at live auditions.
Students submitting digital auditions via Slideroom must pay a $35 audition fee, which can be paid online by credit card by clicking here. Please do not send cash or check by mail. This fee is nonrefundable.
All dancers must bring a photograph of first arabesque to be handed into the audition personnel at the time of registration. The images should be in standard 4x6 or 5x7 size and not need to be professional quality. The applicant's name should be written on the back of the photograph.
The photograph should be taken in a dance studio and students must wear appropriate attire, including shoes. Please see below to review the required dress code. Ladies should take the photograph on pointe if applicable. If you are not on pointe yet, you may take the photographs on demi-pointe or on flat.
All dancers participating in an audition must adhere to the required dress code.
Girls should wear pink tights, pink ballet slippers and a solid leotard in any color. Canvas or leather ballet slippers are acceptable. Hair should be neatly pulled back and away from the face. Girls do not need to bring pointe shoes.
Boys should wear a fitted white leotard or tee shirt, black tights, and black ballet slippers or white ballet slippers with white ankle socks. Canvas or leather ballet slippers are acceptable. All dancers must remove jewelry, warm-ups, and skirts before class begins.
