The Walnut Hill Summer Theater Program’s unique combination of studio classes and professionally mounted stage productions allows students to both develop their craft and apply their skills in performance. During the five-week boarding program for students ages 13–17, each participant takes daily classes in acting, musical theater, and dance and is cast in a play and a musical, as well as the ensemble of a second musical production. Class sizes are intentionally small, affording students individualized attention and a supportive environment in which to develop and strengthen their work. In the latter weeks of the program, actors take the stage for public performances of the two plays and two musicals that they have been rehearsing; past productions have included Chicago, Xanadu, As You Like It, and Twelve Angry Jurors.
Summer Theater classes in acting, musical theater, and movement meet daily Monday through Friday. Over the course of the program, students may also have the opportunity to work with guest faculty from some of the country’s leading colleges and universities, such as The Juilliard School, Carnegie Mellon University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and The Boston Conservatory.
Students alternate rehearsal times for their play and musicals for 6 hours Monday through Friday and 2.5 hours on Sunday evenings. After completing the program, students leave Walnut Hill Summer Theater with a heightened sense of accomplishment and a confidence that applies to all facets of their lives.
