The Program

Musical Theater Workshop

This class is for students in grades 4-6 who are looking for an introduction to musical theater.  It will concentrate on acting, singing and movement and focus primarily on large and small ensemble works from the American musical theater repertoire.  There will be a small cabaret style showcase at the end of each semester.

Advanced Musical Theater Workshop

This class is for students in grades 6-8 who already have a fundamental understanding of musical theater. It concentrates on acting, singing and musical theater dance styles. The class will focus primarily on individual work as well as ensemble, but at a more advanced level. There will be a cabaret style show at the end of Semester 1 and a One Act musical performance at the end of Semester 2. 

Admission is by audition only

Advanced Acting

This class is for students in grades 6 -8. Students will continue to explore the craft and technique of acting through improvisation, scene study, and performance. Concentration will primarily be on works by contemporary playwrights and focus on scene and monologue work. There will be a showcase of scenes and monologues at the end of Semester 1 and a One Act Play at the end of Semester 2.

Admission is by audition only

Creative Dramatics
This class is for students in grades 4-6. Improvisation, playmaking, creative movement and story-telling will be introduced and expanded upon. There will be a showcase at the end of Semester I and a performance of an original script created by the students at the end of Semester II. Please come prepared with an open mind and lots of imagination!

Private Musical Theater Vocal Coaching

This class is for students in grades 6-8 who want individual voice lessons for musical theater repertoire. Private sessions will focus on vocal technique, interpretation, and audition training. Students enrolled in the Advanced Musical Theater Workshop are encouraged to apply.

Tuition

The application fee is $35. See tuition for each class below. Tuition must be paid before admittance to the first class. Tuition for the second semester is due before January 25, 2008

Half hour coaching’s will be available. Inquire about days and times.
$25 per half hour session.

Audition Requirements:

Advanced Musical Theater: Prepare one song (a cappella or bring music for accompanist)

Advanced Acting: One memorized monologue no longer than two minutes (use one of our sample pieces or a piece of your own choosing)

Classes will not be held during the Thanksgiving or Christmas breaks.

Semester II
February 4 – June 1, 2008
Classes will not be held during the February and April public school vacation periods.

Faculty

Leah Fine, Theater Director - Theater Academy

This is Leah’s third year as director of the Theater Community Academy. Leah has worked as a professional actress for many years, as well as taught in a multitude of venues and schools around the Boston area. She received her BFA in acting from the University of Connecticut and will receive her masters in Theater Education from Emerson College this fall. Leah also studied dance and voice for many years. While teaching at Walnut Hill, she is performing in various venues around Boston and teaching drama for the Boston public Schools.

Joshua Finstein, Music Director

Josh has been working with children since he was 16. He has musically directed or accompanied shows at all levels across the Greater Boston Area. Josh holds a B.A. from Brandeis University and two Masters degree’s from Northeastern University; he recently left a position with Ernst & Young to pursue a career in business and music.

Joe Cabral, Director of Theater

The Walnut Hill Theater Academy is part of the Walnut Hill Theater Department, under the direction of Joe Cabral. Mr. Cabral serves on the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild, Inc., and is a member of the National Educational Theater Association. He worked professionally in theater, film, and television until 1985. His productions at Walnut Hill have twice been recognized by the American High School Theater Festival.
